Opposition stalls proceedings in RS demanding PM's presence in House on conversion issue

Proceedings in Rajya Sabha were washed out for the third consecutive day today as opposition continued to press for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response over religious conversions and also protested suspension of a Congress member for the day. Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said he could not direct the government to ensure the presence of the Prime Minister. He kept pleading that the discussion on communal violence could start and Home Minister Rajnath Singh would reply to it. But the agitated members didn't relent. The House witnessed repeated adjournments during the day before adjourning finally for the day.

When the House re-assembled at 2 pm after three adjournments, Derek O Brien of the Trinamool Congress made some objectionable remarks against the Prime Minister. It was strongly objected to by the treasury benches with Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi taking exception to the remarks. Heated arguments followed for about half an hour and several opposition members trooped into the well of the House forcing its adjournment till tomorrow. The only business that could be transacted amid din was withdrawal of the Anti-Hijacking (Amendment) Bill 2010 and introduction of a similar Bill.
