Opposition today stalled proceedings in the two Houses of Parliament seeking a statement from the Prime Minister on the phone tapping controversy. Some opposition members also demanded JPC probe into the issue. After repeated adjournments the two Houses were adjourned for the day even though the government asserted that no telephone tapping or eaves dropping was authorized on political leaders. <br/><br/>Making an identical statement in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the Home minister P Chidambaram assured that thorough investigations will be carried out by the appropriate agencies if any evidence is discovered on the phone tapping controversy. Mr. Chidambaram said the allegations that appeared in a news magazine, nothing so far has been found either in the records of the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) or elsewhere. The Home minister made it clear that the intelligence agencies are fully accountable to the government which is committed to defend the rights of every citizen. Mr. Chidambaram made this statement in the two Houses amidst din as opposition continued to press for a statement by the Prime Minister on the issue. <br/><br/>Despite the leader of the House and Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee informing the Lok Sabha that Dr Singh will make a statement in the House during the day, the opposition did not relent and trooped into the well of the House raising slogans against the government. As order could not be restored in the House despite repeated pleas by the Speaker, when it met at 2 P.M. it was adjourned for the day. The Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar allowed senior BJP leader Mr. L K Advani to speak before in the question hour. He took a strong exception to the phone tapping controversy and pleaded for a stringent law to prevent recurrence of such events in future.<br/><br/>The Rajya Sabha witnessed two adjournments before it was adjourned for the day. The opposition continued to press for the Prime Minister's response in the House leading to its adjournment for the day. Some members were also demanding a JPC probe into the issue.
