In Greece, the Opposition Socialist Party has won the general elections. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis conceded defeat after early results showed the Socialists under George Papandreou have a lead of more than eight per cent, enough to give them absolute majority in Parliament. <br/><br/>Costas Karamanlis's gamble in calling snap election backfired spectacularly. After congratulating George Papandreou on his victory, the outgoing Prime Minister resigned from the Conservative Party leadership. The victorious socialists described their success as a humbling responsibility and promised to do everything humanly possible to have a productive four year term on behalf of all Greeks.
