The opposition today attacked the government for large scale corruption in scams like Adarsh Housing Society, 2 G spectrum and Commonwealth Games projects. Raising the matter during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Basudev Acharia of the CPIM, said the resignation by the Maharashtra Chief Minister on the housing society scam is not enough and the government should order a thorough probe to bring the culprits to book. He also demanded a statement from the government. The Leader of the opposition, Mrs Sushma Swaraj, also demanded discussions on all scandals including the Adarsh Housing scam and the misuse of funds of flagship programmes. She also alleged the misuse of the premier investigating agency, CBI. Mr Sharad Yadav of JD(U) alleged that the autonomy of the CBI has been eroded and people have lost faith in its functioning. He said the funds meant for the poor are not reaching them. He demanded stringent laws to check corruption and punish the guilty. AIR correspondent Sarita Brara reports that the opening day of the winter session of Parliament today began on a cool note. Unlike some of the previous sessions, when invariably the question hour suffered because of repeated interruptions followed by adjournments today it was a smooth affair. There were raging issues which the opposition wanted a discussion on, but agreed to raise the matter in Zero Hour instead of pressing for it during the question hour. This followed an all party meeting convened by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mrs Meira Kumar, in the morning at which, the political leaders agreed to fully cooperate in the smooth functioning of the house and this was reflected both in the question hour and the Zero hour. Hopefully, the same spirit will prevail throughout the session.
