The Kerala Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy today met the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in New Delhi to draw his attention to the issue of the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam.
Later talking to reporters outside Parliament Mr. Chandy said that the Prime Minister has asked him to talk to the Water Resources Minister, Mr. Pawan Kumar Bansal.
Mr. Chandy also met some of the Members of Parliament from Kerala, who were on a dharana outside Parliament on the Dam issue.
Meanwhile, Kerala government has held a high level disaster management review meeting in Thiruvananthapuram today on measures to be adopted in case of an exigency in the 116 year old Mullaperiyar dam safety issue.
Kerala government is getting geared to shift most vulnerable 500 families living in places in between Idukki and mullapperiyar dams on safety aspects.
Kerala government is also to inform the High Court about the disaster management measures to be adopted. At the same time, water level of the dam built in 1895 continues to be above the permissible level of 136 feet.
Tamil Nadu has said that due to technical design of the dam it is not possible to reduce water to 120 feet on war footing. As mass agitation and hunger strike continue in Kerala, opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has also written to the Prime Minister to intervene in the dam issue.
Constitutional experts opine that if the prolonged legal tussle between Kerala and Tamil Nadu is solved outside court rooms it will be a silver lining in many inter state water disputes.
