The Sports Ministry has made it clear that henceforth only those athletes who represent the country in important events will get government grant. Recently, just before the Incheon Asiad several top ranking sports persons refused to take part in the event on the pretext that if they participate in the Asiad their ranking may be affected. Tennis players like Somdev Dev Verman, Leander Paes and Rohan Boppna did not take part in the Asiad. Ace badminton players like Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta and boxers like Vijender Singh also did not participate in the Asiad on the pretext of their injury. The Sports Ministry has said that if any athlete expresses his or her inability to represent the nation in any tournament, the concerned sports federation will probe the authenticity of his or her claim.
