Onion prices have shot up in Maharashtra during the past two days. AIR correspondent reports, Onion prices in Maharashtra are continuously rising. The price of onion at Asia's largest onion wholesale market Lasalgaon in Nashik district peaked at Rs 6,326 per quintal yesterday. Retail prices also shot up after the wholesale market prices of onions in Lasalgaon, increased. According to officials of revenue dept, the food and civil supplies department have been directed to check the availability of onions in the wholesale markets and also to report about hoarding or black marketing, if any, by unscrupulous elements.<br/><br/>According to Navi Mumbai ptc, APMC imported 84 tonn onion from Egypt on Friday and soon it will be made available in the market. However, the retail prices will remain around 60-70 rs per kg. The prices rise of onion is mainly attributed to low rainfall in Maharashtra, which has resulted in less production of the crop. Besides, the production of onion in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh from where Maharashtra imports the crop to a large extent are also in shortage of production of the crop because of irregular rainfall.
