Onion prices fall further

With government intervention, Onion prices fell further by about 10 rupees in the retail markets. The NAFED has started selling onion on its retail outlets at 35 rupees a kilogram. The government has already taken a series of measures to bring down the prices. These include ban on its exports and zero duty on imports. While retail prices of onions have started easing from their peak of 70 to 85 rupees per kg earlier this week, tomato and garlic rates remain high, at 40 to 60 per kg and 250 to 300 per kg respectively. Prices of onions had surged due to crop damage in themajor producing region of Maharashtra, besides hoarding.AIR correspondent reports, in order to maintain adequate supply of Onions in the city, the Delhi government kept Azadpur market , Asia's biggest wholesale fruits & vegetables market open even on Sunday to facilitate the sale and purchase of the item.
