The retail prices of onions declined by Rs 5 to 10 per kg in major metros. This followed raids on Friday by income tax authorities on onion traders across the country and reports of beginning of fresh arrivals of crop from Gujarat.Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee wrote to Chief Ministers to crack down on hoarders to ensure smooth supply of essential items from farm gate to retail customers. Meanwhile, the Government said that it had initiated talks with Pakistan on the issue of ban on export of onions to India. The country's apex fair trade watchdog, Competition Commission of India (CCI) has already instituted an inquiry into the rising prices of onions.
