The government has said, the skyrocketing Onion price is likely to come down after two-three weeks. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said, the situation is likely to improve thereafter in the wake of its move to ban exports of the commodity. He, however, ruled out any immediate plans to import onions to arrest prices even though small consignments arrived from Pakistan. Explaining the reason for the onion price rise, Mr. Pawar said, a substantial quantity of onion has been damaged because of the heavy rains in the Nashik area, the biggest producing centre. He expressed hope that with the arrival of stocks from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in the next 2-3 weeks, prices will come down . He was talking to reporters on the side lines of a function in New Delhi today. The minister highlighted the steps taken by the government to control prices such as suspension of exports till 15th of January and more than doubling minimum export price of onion to 1,200 US Dollars per tonne from 525 US Dollars per tonne. The prices of onions have soared to 60-70 rupees per kg in retail markets in Delhi and many other important cities of the country from 35-40rupees just a few days ago. Earlier, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma as well as NAFED Managing Director Sanjeev Chopra had attributed the sudden rise in onion prices to hoarding and speculations.
