The country's onion output is likely to dip by over 12 per cent in this crop year. It may come to 10.5 million tonnes in the 2010-11 as compared to 12 million tonnes in the 2009-10 crop year. National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation's Additional Director, Satish Bhonde said that Maharashtra and Karnataka are the main onion-producing states in the country, accounting for almost 50 per cent of total production. He added unseasonal rains in these two states have hit production of the late kharif crop. Meanwhile the prices of Onions in the National Capital have again showing an up ward trend. After the NAFED announced to sell onions at 35 rupees per kg through their outlets, onions are selling between 40 to 60 rupees a kg.
