Onion auction underway in Nashik

The much-awaited auction of onions began smoothly at various Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) in Nashik district of Maharashtra, this morning.

The two-day stir by onion traders following their differences with labourers regarding the trading of onions, ended last evening, after the State government’s assurance that all their demands would be met.

A meeting was held between onion traders, government officials and labourers' union at Lasalgaon in Nashik, which is the biggest onion market in the country. The government said that demands of the workers will be met by July 10.

However, the workers’ union has warned that in case the government does not keep its promise, the workers will resume strike from July 11.

The labourers are demanding a hike in levy wages and traders are against these levy rates to Mathadi workers, who are engaged in loading and unloading of goods at the APMCs.

The two-day stir had badly affected the supply of onions as Lasalgaon market.
