One year compulsory rural stint for docs: Health Min Azad

Health and Family Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that it will be made compulsory for MBBS degree holders to work for one year in rural areas.

Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha today, he said that a decision in this regard will be taken soon after the consultations with Medical Council of India. He said that it will be ensured that doctors could not register their names in more than one state.

Mr. Azad said shortcomings in this regard will be corrected soon. He said that the government has increased seats in MD courses substantially. Seats in MBBS courses have also been gone up.

The minister said it will not be practical that India prohibits medical studies in some countries but it is mandatory for students passed out from these countries to face examination. Such students can face such exam twice in a year.
