One Tamil Nadu fisherman allegedly killed by Lankan navy in Palk Straits

In a fresh incident of attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk Straits, one person was killed when Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire. The incident triggered a demand from Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for Prime Minister's intervention to end atrocities of the island Navy. Three fishermen, who put out to sea from Jagadapattinnam near Pudukottai on Wednesday, came under indiscriminate firing from Sri Lankan Navy men when they were fishing about 14 nautical miles off the hamlet. Fisheries officials said, while one of them died on the spot, the other two escaped. As the incident found an echo in the state Assembly on Thursday the government said it had taken up the issue with the Centre and demanded strong action.Karunanidhi, whose DMK is a key UPA ally, sent a telegram to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, stating that the atrocities of Sri Lankan Navy on the fishermen were continuing unabated despite repeated assurances given by the Indian and Sri Lankan Governments that such incidents would not recur.Meanwhile, Sri Lanka on Thursday denied the reported attack on Indian fishermen, leading to alleged killing of at least one of them. Speaking to Prasar Bharati Colombo correspondent, Lakshman Hullugalle, Director General of the Media Centre for National Security denied that any such incidents involving the Sri Lankan Navy took place. Earlier news reports from India had alleged that the navy shot at two Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu for trespassing the Indian- Sri Lankan Maritime Boundary.
