One of the accused arrested in Mumbai gang rape case

Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil has promised to ensure speedy justice to the Mumbai gangrape victim. Addressing a press conference in Mumbai today, Mr. Patil said the charge sheet in the case will be filed at the earliest and the trail will be conducted in a fast-track court.

Mr. Patil further said that the identities of all the accused have been established with the help of one arrested accused. Mumbai Police will soon arrest the remaining four men.

Mr. Patil said that a circular will soon be issued to enable women journalists to seek help from the nearest police station when they are on assignments, in case they have any suspicion about that particular area.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has also expressed grief at the incident and said the culprits would be severely punished. He had added that government would bear the cost of the victim’s medical treatment.

Meanwhile, journalists today held a rally and a 'silent protest' to condemn the incident and express dissatisfaction over the deteriorating law and order situation in the metropolis and the state.

A 23-year-old journalist, interning with a English magazine was allegedly gangraped by five men in central Mumbai last night. The victim, undergoing treatment at Jaslok Hospital is currently composed and stable.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has earlier told reporters that more than 20 teams, including 10 from the Crime Branch, have been pressed into service to track down the perpetrators.
