One killed, 26 injured in roadside blasts in Iraq

In Iraq, a policeman was killed and at least 26 other people were wounded in roadside blasts in Baghdad today. Reports say the policeman was killed in western Baghdad when a bomb exploded near a police patrol. Five others, at least two of them policemen and two civilians, were wounded in the attack. Elsewhere in the Iraqi capital, a roadside bomb near an army patrol in the western part of the city wounded six , including two soldiers. And two policemen and 13 civilians were injured after a bomb exploded in northern Baghdad.AIR correspondent Dushyant Ojha reports that Analysts say that UN security council’s decision will help Iraqis in their efforts to build a secure, stable and prosperous nation. The 15-member body during discussion stressed that challenges to security in Iraq still exist and that improvements need to be sustained through meaningful political dialogue and national unity.UN secretary general however warned that further delays in this connection could impact negatively on the country’s stability, democratic transition and development. The top UN envoy to Iraq stated that the process of forming a new government represents a real test for the country’s transition to democracy and the commitment of Iraqi leaders to adhere to the constitution.Iraqi political parties are struggling to reach a consensus to form a new government in the country, after parliamentary elections held on 7th March this year. No single party could get a majority needed to form the government. Iraqia alliance headed by former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi won 91 seats while a coalition led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki bagged 89 seats in the 325-member Parliament. The INA block dominated by religious Shia parties grabbed 70 seats. Meanwhile, the violent incidents in the country continue intermittently, while US forces are due to end their combat operation by the end of this month and planning to leave Iraq by end of next year.
