Omar Abdullah calls on Chidambaram & Sonia ahead of CCS meeting to discuss J&K situation

Ahead of the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security this evening, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Home Minister P. Chidambaram this morning. He also met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Earlier, Omar Abdullah had demanded partial withdrawal or amendment to the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. Defence Minister A.K. Antony while denying the reported perception about a division in the government over the issue, said that it is for the government to take a final call. The CCS is likely to take stock of the latest situation in the State and is also likely to discuss Omar Abdullah's demand. The BJP has reaffirmed its opposition to dilution of the AFSPA or its partial withdrawal. In the Kashmir Valley itself, the ancestral home of the State Education Minister Peerzada Mohd. Sayeed was attacked in Anantnag. Three FIRs have been registered against moderate Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq for violence at Lal Chowk on Eid. He has been booked under unlawful activities Prevention Act, for instigating violence and arson. The Police has termed his Eid speech as highly inflammatory and anti-national.
