India drew a blank on Thursday as Tintu Luka failed in her bid to enter the finals of the women's 800 metres despite clocking her season best time in the semi finals. Luka timed One minute and 59.69 seconds, ending up sixth in the heat and got eliminated. Earlier, high jumper Sahana Kumari and wrestler Geeta Phogat also made their departure from the Games without making any serious attempt to climb the medal podium.
Sahana performed well below her personal best and was knocked out of the women's high jump after clearing 1.80 metres. She finished at joint 15th in the Group B of the qualifying competition at the Olympic Stadium. The 30-year-old athlete sailed over the bar at the first attempt with a 1.80 metres leap but failed in her endeavour to clear the 1.85 metre mark in all her three attempts and got eliminated.
At the Excel Stadium, India's lone woman wrestler Geeta Phogat's campaign came to an end when she was defeated by the formidable Tetyana Lazareva of Ukraine in the women's freestyle 55 kg repechage round two. The Ukrainian won the bout comfortably with a resounding 3-0 margin. Geeta made it to the repechage rounds when her first round opponent, Canada's Tonya Lynn Verbeeek, went all the way to the final. It gave the Indian another chance to have a shot at the bronze medal.
