The country's highest sporting award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna will be conferred this year upon Olympic medallists, shooter Vijay Kumar and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt. The award will be presented by President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee in a function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on the 29th of this month. Pistol shooter Vijay Kumar won a silver in the 25 metres rapid fire event at the London Olympics, while Yogeshwar Dutt bagged a bronze in 60 kg free style event. Apart from this, 25 sportspersons will be conferred with Arjuna awards this year. Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, after recovering from a rare germ cell cancer is among the list of 25 Arjuna awardee sportspersons. The Sports Ministry said in a statement that normally only one award of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is given every year to an individual sportsperson. However, the Scheme provides that this condition can be relaxed in exceptional circumstances such as winning of an Olympic medal. The choices of the awardees were made by a Selection Committee consisting of eminent sportspersons and sports administrators, headed by 2004 Olympics silver medallist shooter Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.
