Olympic Hockey: India loses to SA; finishes 12th

On the penultimate day of the London Olympics, India finished at 12th team position in the Men's Hockey after they lost 2-3 against South Africa in the playoff match. South Africa opened their score in the eighth minute but India came back five minutes later with an equalizer. South Africa took the lead again just minutes before the half time and widened the lead in the second half. India made a late comeback and decreased the South African lead but there was not enough time left. The 12th place finish means India fared worst among all teams, who took part in the event.

Later in the Day, Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt will compete in the Men's 60 kilogram freestyle competition. He will take on Bulgaria's Anatolie Ilarionovitch Guidea in his opening bout. India's Basanta Bahadur Rana is taking part in the Men's 50 kilometre race walk event.

Yesterday, India's hopes of increasing their medals tally took a blow as grapplers Amit Kumar Dahiya and Narsingh Pancham Yadav crashed out of the wrestling competition. At the Excel Arena, Amit defeated his Iranian rival Rahimi Hassan Sabzali 3-1 to enter the quarter-finals but he lost the next two bouts, including a repechage, to make his exit from the freestyle 55 kg weight category. In the freestyle 74 kg category, Narsingh was outclassed by his much superior Canadian rival Matthew Judah Gentry and lost his opener 1-3.

There are 33 Gold medals at stake at the games today, five of them will come from men's boxing. The Gold in Men's football will be decided today when favourites Brazil meet Mexico. The women's Basketball and Volleyball finals are also scheduled for the day.

Today's Athletics events include the relay finals of Men's 4 x 100 metres and women's 4 x 400 metres. The finals of Men's 5,000 metres, Men's Javelin throw and women's high jump will also be held today.
