The captain of merchant vessel MSC Chitra, which collided with another cargo ship on August 7 resulting in the oil spill off the Mumbai coast, has approached a local court in the city seeking anticipatory bail. The city police had registered a case against the captain and crew members of both the vessels under several sections of the IPC and the Environment Act. In his bail plea, the captain of MSC Chitra has stated that the collision was an accident and his custodial interrogation is not required. The bail plea would be heard later today.Meanwhile, in wake of oil spill off the coast due to the collision of the two ships, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started conducting random checks of seafood items in civic markets to ensure they are hygienic and free of any contamination. Checks have been conducted only in affected areas like Colaba, Fort, Nariman Point and others from where most of the sea food is produced. BMC Assistant Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kamat informed that the civic body has taken samples of sea food items like Bombay Duck and Prawns. He said these samples have been sent to labs for testing and reports will come within four days. Kamat said the process will continue at least for few more days.AIR correspondent reports, the Maharashtra Transport Minister Vikhe Patil is likely to survey the cargo ship MSC Chitra later today.
