Polling for the first Phase of three-tier panchyatiraj institutions in Odisha ended peacefully today. Polling was held in 194 zilla parishad zones and 1,453 gram panchayats under 82 panchayat samitis in 30 districts of the state. According to State Election Commission of Odisha, voting was postponed in 13 booths under Nakamamudi gram panchayat following the landmine explosion in the Malkangiri district by the Maoists on Friday.Polling, which was postponed on the recommendation of the Malkangiri Collector citing security reasons, will be held on February 19.The next phases of the three-tier panchayat polls will be held on Februar 13, 15, 17 and 19. Special security arrangements were made in Maoist-affected areas for the polling. The counting of votes will be held after the polls and the results will be declared by the concerned presiding officers at the booth level. The ruling BJD is in do or die situation and is mired in controversies due to the large-scale corruption charges and the recent Pipili gang-rape incident and hooch tragedy in Cuttack. Any better performances by the opposition Congress and BJP will come as a referendum for the BJD rule led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
