The death toll in the devastating flood in Odisha has increased to 39 with nine more persons missing in the flood water. Even as the flood situation in the state is improving, the formation of another low pressure area over coastal gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood has created panic among the people. According to Bhubaneswar Meterological Centre, many parts of coastal and some interior parts of Odisha area likely to get rain during the next 48 hours.Meanwhile, nine gates of the Hirakund dam has remained open to release 1,67,105 cusec of water per second with the level of reservoir at 628.5 feet against the capacity of 630 feet. Major River like Mahanadi is increasing at Naraj, while Brahmani River is rising at Jenapur. Two other major rivers Subarnarekha and Baitarani are falling at Rajghat and Jamsola. The state government said, 198 villages are still marooned in the flood water. As many as 4,600 villages, 20 cities and over 31 lakh people have been badly affected in the current flood in 19 of the 30 districts in the state. Damage reports of over 1 lakh houses and crops in nearly 3 lakh hectares have been damaged in the flood. An inter-ministerial team from the Centre is likely to arrive in Odisha soon to assess the damage caused by flood.
