In Odisha, police today arrested Congress MLA Ramesh Jena in connection with a shootout at a residential apartment complex at Bhubaneswar. The MLA represents Sanakhemundi assembly constituency in Ganjam district of Odisha. He was arrested at Badaadanga village in Brahmagiri, about 80 km from Bhubaneswar. A lower court of Bhubaneswar has rejected the bail plea of the MLA and remanded him to 14-day judicial custody. The Congress has criticised the arrest of its MLA and said the move is 'politically motivated' by Naveen Patnaik government to divert public attention from multi-crore dal scam. Earlier, the Police had arrested six alleged criminals from the residence of the MLA on first of this month this year at Bhubaneswar after a brief encounter. The MLA was present inside the house when the alleged criminals were arrested. However, the Congress legislator pleaded he didn't know the criminals and the entire episode was 'politically motivated'. MLA Ramesh Jena is out on a bail from Orissa High Court on a murder case.Meanwhile, supporters of Ramesh Jena had begun large-scale violence in Berhampur of Ganjam district. Police had to resort to mild lathi-charge. They also blocked the busy Berhampur-Aska road protesting the MLAs arrest.
