Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha, S Srinivasan , has informed the Election Commission of India about the vacancy in Athagarh assembly constituency.Srinivasan, after going through the judgement of the Supreme Court which cancelled the 2009 assembly elections in Athagarh constituency, has requested the Election Commission to take necessary steps for a by-election in the constituency.The Supreme Court had upheld the Odisha High Court decision, canceling the 2009 assembly elections in Athagarh constituency and ordering fresh polls there.Four-times MLA from Athagarh and former Minister, Ranendra Pratap Swain, had to ran Election Commission to one court after another, alleging he was illegally debarred from contesting the 2009 elections.Later, BJD supported independent candidate Ramesh Chandra Rout won from the constituency.His membership from the Odisha assembly has been declared void by Speaker Pradeep Kumar Amat following the judgement of the Supreme Court last month.
