Human Rights Groups in the United States have welcomed President Barak Obama's decision to move five suspected Al Qaeda members from the Guantanamo prison camp to stand trial in a civilian court in New York. The announcement makes it clear that President Obama is determined to press ahead with his plans to shut down the controversial Guantanamo detention centre by early next year. However leading members of the opposition Republican Party condemned the move. The former Presidential candidate senator John McCain said the men should be tried in military tribunals because they were war criminals who had committed acts of war against American citizens and those of other nations.
