U.S. President Barrack Obama may announce his decision on US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan tonight. Obama spokesman Jay Carney said the president had finalised his decision on the withdrawal plan and would address the nation tonight. He said the President informed his national security team of his plans during a White House meeting on Monday. According to reports roughly 10,000 troops are likely to be withdrawn from Afghanistan this year. Out of these about 5,000 forces are leaving this summer and another 5,000 coming home by the end of the year. There are 100,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. While Defence Secretary Robert Gates and military leaders are in favour of a slow drawdown of U.S. troops the White House advisers are advocating an accelerated pullout now that Osama bin Laden is dead and the 2012 re-election campaign is approaching.
