US President Barak Obama has announced Washington's support to India's claim for a permanent membership in the UN Security Council. Declaring safe haven to terrorists in Pakistan is unacceptable, he said the United States will continue to press Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of Mumbai terror attack to justice. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ruling out talks with Pakistan till Islamabad ends its terror emenating from its soil, and new Indo-US home land security dialogue to counter terrorism are among the key decisions made during President Obama's engagements in New Delhi today. The United States has agreed to lift restrictions on hi-tech trade in space and defence areas and support India's membership in nuclear Suppliers Group-NSG, besides boosting of civil nuclear cooperation.Addressing a joint press conference at the end of his Summit talks with President Obama in New Delhi today, Dr. Manmohan Singh said the US Homeland security and the Ministry of Home Affairs will start a dialogue on securing ports, airports and borders in the country. Dr. Manmohan Singh asserted that India wants to engage with Pakistan to resolve all outstanding issues and it is not afraid of discussing Kashmir. But he said, Pakistan cannot simultaneously be talking and at the same time keep the terror machine active as ever before. Once Pakistan moves away from terror induced coercion, New Delhi will be very happy to engage productively with Pakistan. Obama emphasized that the US cannot impose a solution to the Kashmir problem but offered to play any role the two countries would like to do to reduce the tensions.Speaking elegantly on growing Indo-US ties, Obama said that the relationship is indispensable in addressing trade, economic opportunities and confronting challenges like terrorism and religious extremism besides spread of nuclear weapons. President Obama said that the two leaders agreed on the need for all nations in the region to take steps so that there are no safe heavens for terrorists. The US President said that India is already a power and it has a crucial role to play in East Asia as well as the rest of the World.He also announced the India's decision to buy Ten C 17 cargo planes that will create 22,000 jobs in the United States.Dr. Singh welcomed the US move to end export control on dual use technology to India and support for its membership of multilateral groupings in the nuclear field including the nuclear suppliers group. Allaying American fears over outsourcing, Dr.Singh added that India is not in business of stealing jobs but cooperation in the economic field will create a win win situation for both the countries. The two leaders also discussed implementation of civil nuclear agreement and cooperation in clean technology. Dr. Manmohan Singh hailed the US move to set up a research centre in India in civil nuclear field and expand cooperation in the field of health, agriculture, education. The two leaders also discussed the ways to reduce trade barriers. Later, amidst cheers of members of Parliament at the joint sitting of both the Houses in the Central Hall, President Barack Obama announced Washington's support to India's claim for permanent seat in the UN Security Council. He said, the United States looks forward to a reformed UN Security Council that includes India as a permanent member. President Obama said the just and the sustainable international order that America seeks includes a United Nations that is efficient, effective, credible and legitimate. Lauding India's contribution to the peace keeping mission, he also spoke about stellar role in fighting the climate change issue at Copenhagen. Coming down heavily on terrorism, the U.S. President said that the terror safe havens in Pakistan is unacceptable and United States will continue to insist on Pakistani leadership to bring the perpetrators of Mumbai terror to justice. Describing Indo-U.S. relations as a defining partnership in the 21st century, he said, instead of resisting global economy, India has become one of the growth engines. Together India and United States can resist protectionism that stifles growth. He also said that both the countries can create together hi-tech and hi-wage jobs. Amidst cheers, Barack Obama lauded the role played by Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom struggle and said that had it not been for his message of peace, he would not be standing here as President of the United States. Obama said that the Gandhian principle of non-violence greatly influenced American Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King and gave the message to the world that this is the only logical approach for justice and progress. He said, he was humbled when he visited the Mani Bhavan in Mumbai and Rajghat in Delhi the samadhi of the Father of the Nation. The US President was equally cheered when he mentioned the role of Dr. Ambedkar in uplifting the downtrodden people and in drafting the Constitution of India.The American President said, he feels honoured to address the representatives of more than one billion people, the world's largest democracy adding that he brought the greetings of world's oldest democracy America and three million patriotic Indian American. Dealing at length on non-proliferation, President Obama said, U.S. recognises every nation's right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy but they also have to accept international obligations. This applies to Iran also. Referring to Myanmar, he said no one has right to steal elections like its happening there.President said American troops will begin pulling out from Afghanistan next year but made it clear that his country will not leave the people or the region to violent extremists who threaten us all.Earlier, U.S. President Barack Obama was given a standing ovation as he entered the Central Hall of Parliament with the packed House cheering him. Welcoming him, the Vice President Hamid Ansari described him as a visiting dignitary of great eminence. He was confident that Obama's visit will bring the peoples' of both the nations together in fighting extremism.
