Obama appeals to call off Quran burning event

US President Barack Obama has issued an urgent appeal to Terry Jones, pastor of a tiny church in Florida, who is planning to burn copies of the Quran, to call the event off. In a television interview, the President called it a destructive stunt which could help militants attract further recruits. He said he hopes that the pastor would cancel the burning plan to mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.Indonesia which has the world's biggest Muslim population has called on Barack Obama to stop the pastor from carrying out the threat to burn copies of the Quran. It says the burning would damage relations between Islam and the West. Malaysia called it a heinous crime. India's Home Minister, P. Chidambaram while condemning the proposed action of the pastor called on US officials to prevent the outrage taking place. He said no one who is interested in maintaining harmony and peace among different sections of the people can condone such action.
