Nuclear Arms Reduction Treaty replacement by year end say US and Russia

US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev say they still plan to have a replacement of nuclear arms reduction treaty ready by the end of the year. Mr. Obama and his Russian counterpart met in Singapore today after the close of the APEC forum and the two committed to a replacement for the START-One pact which expires on December 5th. The two leaders also agreed that time is running out for Iran to approve a deal to ship its enriched uranium out of the country for further reprocessing. Under the plan brokered by the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, and agreed by Russia, the US and France, Iran would send about 1,200kg or 70% of its low-enriched uranium to Russia by the year's end for processing. Meanwhile, Mr. Medvedev says he still hopes to convince Iran to send its enriched uranium to Russia where it could be further processed to fuel an ageing reactor in Tehran.
