A senior official in Libya's National Transitional Council, NTC, has said tribal leaders in Sirte would be given a further week from Thursday to try to bring about a peaceful hand-over of the town, the last major stronghold of troops loyal to Col. Gaddafi. Previously, the head of the NTC had given pro-Gaddafi forces in Sirte a deadline of Saturday to surrender. Leaders of the National Transitional Council will set up their plans for their country's future at an international conference in Paris today. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and the British Prime Minister, Mr . David Cameron are chairing the meeting. The French Foreign Minister Allen Juppe said France had secured United Nations' approval to release more than two billion dollars in Libyan assets. Libya is potentially a rich country. There are some frozen assets which would have been used by the former regime. Mr. Juppe said now they are trying to release those assets to start rebuilding the country .
