Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur has said, Government of India has set up the National Sports University NSU at Imphal in Manipur and it is a Central Sports University established through the National Sports University Act, 2018. <br />''<br />''In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Mr Thakur said, it is a specialised University and the first of its kind in the country, set up to promote Sports Education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching, besides functioning as the national training centre for select sports disciplines by adopting best international practices.<br />''<br />'' He said, National Sports University is also envisaged as an apex institution for advanced study and imparting training in Physical Education. The Minister said, besides the NSU, the Government also runs the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education LNIPE at Gwalior, Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports NSNIS at Patiala, Punjab, and Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education LNCPE at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, which are premier sports and physical education training-cum research institutes in the country.<br />''<br />''Mr. Anurag Singh Thakur  said, presently, there is no proposal under consideration in the Ministry for setting up more such Central Sports Universities or Institutions. Mr Thakur said, Sports being a State Subject, the responsibility to promote and develop sports in the country, including physical and sports education, rests primarily with the respective State and UT Governments. He said, the Union Government supplements their efforts by bridging critical gaps. He said, University and Institutes of the Ministry cater to the students, athletes, physical education teachers, coaches and researchers from all States and UTs of the country.<br />
