NSA Ajit Doval defends Yakub's execution, slams Tharoor

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval has refuted claims that 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon was executed because India could not get hold of his brother Tiger Memon. Mr. Doval said there is no interlinkage between Yakub and Tiger; adding that Yakub was tried through the due process of law. Mr. Doval also stressed that India should take Tiger Memon to his logical judicial consequence. National Security Adviser was speaking at the 21st Lalit Doshi Memorial Lecture on 'State Security, Statecraft and Conflict of Values' in Mumbai yesterday.

Stating that death penalty must prevail where larger interest of the nation is involved; Mr. Doval said he disapproved of Mr. Shashi Tharoor's remarks that state sponsored killings diminish us all and reduce us to murderers. Noting that there has always been a talk on just laws and unjust laws and about correct interventions and incorrect interventions, the NSA said, the scriptures have addressed this dilemma and went on to quote from the Bhagvad Gita and the Holy Quran to explain his point of view. Striking an aggressive note, the NSA said power is not as good as you have it, but as good as you can exercise. Mr. Doval added that "weakness" of a nation includes "unjustified tolerance".
