Two Indian diplomats, who were supposed to leave for Stavanger in Norway to expedite custody of two Indian children to their family, have postponed their visit. The diplomats were supposed to help the parents get the custody of children before a Norwegian Court on Friday. The decision was taken after reports that the children's father Anurup Bhattacharya had accused his wife Sagarika of marital violence.
Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said the custody battle is now a personal matter between husband and wife. She said, the government had made efforts to get the children to India. External Ministry Officials, however, said that the Indian Ambassador will speak to the parents, Anurup and Sagarika.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat has asked the Indian government to stay involved in the case despite the new complications.
AIR correspondent reports that according to an agreement with Norwegian authorities, the kids, Abhigyan and Aishwarya would have returned to India and been raised by their uncle. However, a court hearing to approve this arrangement has been postponed indefinitely. The uncle of the children has also refused to be their guardian.
The two children have been in foster care since May last year with the Norwegian child services. The Norwegian Child Welfare Services said that there is a fear of possible violence against the children and lack of adequate parental care. The two were expected to return to Kolkata within days, but may now continue to live in Norway.
