NPCIL clarifies over Jaitapur Power plant

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited – NPCIL has clarified that the location of Jaitapur Power plant was selected after due consideration and was based on favorable reports submitted by various expert agencies. In a statement issued from Mumbai today, NPCIL’s Executive Director Mr. N Nagaich has said that opinions of many prominent geological and seismological experts was taken into view before finalizing the design and location of Jaitapur power project. The statement added that although there are no Micro Earthquake events within 44 km of the site, NPCIL has designed the plan in such a way that it very well accommodates even higher-impact earthquakes with comfortable margins. This statement was issued after some press reports suggested that a high intensity earthquake may occur at Jaitapur. The reports quoted US seismologist Dr. Roger Bilham’s media briefing organized by Greenpeace on January 12, 2012.
