In Assam, a noted freedom fighter, social worker and journalist Shiva Prasad Baruah passed away at his Bhangagarh residence in Guwahati on Tuesday night. He was 97 and was suffering from old-age ailments for long time. Born on 27 May, 1913 at Teok in Jorhat district, late Baruah played active role in the Quit India Movement in 1942. A close associate of the national Heros like- Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose, Shiva Prasad Barua was the founder editor of the famous Assamese magazine ‘Bordoi Chila’ besides associating with two other magazines- ‘Bonti’ and ‘Lovely Asom’. He was also an active member of the Indian National Congress in his initial political life. Later, he joined the Janata Dal. Chief Minister Mr. Tarun Gogoi and various other organizations of the State have condoled the death of Shiva Prasad Baruah.
