<span style="color: #222222;">Legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away at the age of 95 in Kolkata<b>&nbsp;</b>this morning<b>.</b>&nbsp;A Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, Sen paved the way for parallel cinema in the country with films like Ek Din Achanak, Padatik,Mrigaya, Akaler Sandhane, Chorus, Kharij, Khandahar, Bhuwan Shome, Akash Kusum and Calcutta 71.</span><br />” <br />” <span style="color: #222222;">He made his directorial debut with Raat Bhore in 1955 and is known for making films that focussed on socio-political issues. Sen, along with his contemporary stalwarts Satyajit Ray and Ritwick Ghatak, wrote a new chapter in Indian cinema with content driven, issue based realistic cinema which appealed to the global diaspora, besides creating ripples in the Indian film industry.</span><br />” <span style="color: #222222;">&nbsp;</span><br />” <span style="color: #222222;">Working in the time when commercial cinema with all its pomp and glamour was ruling the charts, Sen differed from the rest and chose to make film on realistic cinema dealing with some intense issue concerning the society and also affecting the middle class India in the said era. Sen was born in 1923 in Faridpur, now in Bangladesh. As a student, he got involved with the cultural wing of the Communist Party of India but never joined the party.</span><br />” <br />” <span style="color: #222222;">Many of his films are overtly political, and earned him the reputation as a Marxist artist.&nbsp; He debuted in 1955 with ‘Raat Bhore’ and found local acclaim with ‘Neel Akasher Neechey’ and ‘Baishey Shravana’. However, ‘Bhuvan Shome’, finally launched him as a major filmmaker, both nationally and internationally. Besides winning national awards for best feature film for movies like ‘Bhuvan Shoma’ in 1969, ‘Chorus’ in 1974, ‘Mrigaya’ in 1976 and ‘Akaler Sandhane’ in 1980, Sen also won the four national Awards for direction for ‘Bhuvan Shome’, ‘Ek Din Pratidin’, ‘Akaler Sandhane’ and ‘Khandhar’. </span><br />” <br />” <span style="color: #222222;">During his career, he also won awards from the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Montreal World Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival and many others.&nbsp;</span>
