Not a single case of corruption during NDA regime: Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has claimed that during the last two years of NDA regime, there was not a single case of corruption. In an intervention on the motion of thanks to President's Address, Mr. Jaitley said, corruption now is not a matter of core concern. He told opposition parties that the government is trying to bring black money stashed away in foreign banks, but could not reveal the names, unless through judicial process. He said, if the names are made public, it would only help those violators.

Referring to the mounting nonperforming assets of public sector banks, the Finance Minister said, he did not think it a crisis, but a challenge. He claimed the challenge was a result of slowdown in major sectors like steel, power and infrastructure, which defaulted loan repayments. Mr. Jaitley also claimed, the buoyancy in Indian economy is due to public and foreign investments and urban demands.

He criticised Congress for pitting CBI against IB during the UPA regime, thereby damaging the intelligence gathering mechanism. The Finance Minister accused the opposition party of trying to fix some BJP leader in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case. He also charged the Congress with making changes in the SIT constitution and baring the entire security apparatus to fix some political leader in the case. He suggested, opposition parties should eschew obstructionism and join hands with the government for the development of the nation while countering Rahul Gandhi's attack over issues related to intolerance, inflation and foreign policy.

Responding to attack on JNU row, The Minister said the government has nothing against a particular student, an apparent reference to JNU student leader, but asserted that free speech cannot be allowed to be used to advocate break-up of the country. Mr. Jaitley said, his party and government are opposed to any element that raises the bogey of division of the country.
