Northerners get little respite from cold but fog hampered normal life

People in parts of north India have some respite from biting cold today as minimum temperature rose marginally though fog hampered running of trains and some flights had to be rescheduled.<br/><br/>With no fresh deaths due to cold, the toll stood at 214 so far this winter. While minimum temperature in the national capital rose to 9 degree Celsius from yesterday's 8 degree Celsius, the maximum stood at 12.1 degree Celsius for the second day, the lowest in the last five years.<br/><br/>Fog in many parts of north India forced the railways to reschedule six trains, while over four dozen trains ran late. However, Cold conditions worsened in Jammu and Kashmir as mercury further dipped by a few notches in the state. The night temperature rose marginally in many places in Himachal Pradesh though higher reaches of the hill state remained under sub-zero temperature. <br/><br/>Fog and intense cold conditions disrupted normal life in Rajasthan affecting flights and traffic on the highway. Cold conditions abated in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, with mercury rising by three to four notches above normal, although dense fog continued to affect normal life in the region. Most parts of Uttarakhand enjoyed a bright sunny day giving relief to the people from severe cold.<br/><br/>In Bihar, minimum temperature rose further and state capital Patna recorded 6.4 degree Celsius, up from yesterday's 5.7 degree celsius.<br/><br/>In Rajasthan heavy fog affected normal life and disrupted rail,road and air traffic on second day today. Minimum temperature in Mount Abu was minus one degree celsius, while Phalodi was the coldest place in plain areas at 2 degree celsius. Today mild earthquake was also reported near Jaipur.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent Anurag Vajpayee reports from Jaipur that today also heavy fog almost stopped road traffic in the morning. 8 flights from Sanganer airport were resheduled while many trains including Howrah-Sriganganagar,and Jammu Tavi-Ajmer are running late by 10 to 14 hours. People of jaipur are shivering with severe cold ,temp. dips here at 3 * c today. situation of cold wave is continuing in desert areas like Jaisalmer and Churu also. This weather condition has impelled people to start bone fires in day time and number of persons in govt.operated night shelters is increasing.
