Northern India reel under piercing cold wave

As most parts of Himachal Pradesh reeled under piercing cold wave conditions after fresh snowfall, avalanche threat loomed today over Lahaul and Kinnaur areas. Several localities in Shimla and other places went without water this morning with water in pipes freezing. Movement of vehicles in many areas of the state was hit by thick ground frost and snow, leading to traffic snarls. It created inconvenience to thousands of tourists, who had rushed to adjoining tourist resort of Kufri to enjoy the snow there. Heavy snowfall in tribal areas and other mountain ranges brought normal life to a halt and people were forced to stay indoors. Most parts of the state, however, received bright sunshine today after a long run of murky weather. Manali-Leh road was blocked by heavy snow while Hindustan Tibet National Highway was opened upto Matiana. Vehicular traffic to Rampur was being routed via Basantpur an Kingal. Lahaul, Darcha, Dhundhi, Koksar and other high altitude tribal areas were covered under a thick blanket of 150 cm to 200 cm of snow while Rohtang Pass had a 200 cm thick cover of snow. The headquarters of tribal Lahaul and Spiti istrict – Keylong – recorded minimum temperature of minus 9.7 degree, while Kalpa in Kinnaur recorded a low of minus 8.5 degree. In Uttarakhand, after snowfall and rain, cold wave and chilly weather conditions have badly affected normal life in different parts of the state today. According to Met department dry weather may prevail in the next forty eight hours.The Chilling cold condition affected normal life in Uttar Pradesh. The Agra division recorded the lowest temperature of 6 degree Celsius during last twenty four hours which is 6 degree below normal .However the Jhansi and Gorakhpur recorded lowest temperatures above normal. Despite chilling cold conditions large numbersof tourists have been visiting Tajmahal for the last few days.Delhi experienced a further dip in the temperature today with cold winds sweeping the city and shallow fog in the morning. The weather department informed that the morning saw mist and shallow fog. However, there was no rain or drizzle in any part of the city and the sky was mainly clear. The minimum temperature dipped to 8.9 degrees from yesterday's 11 degrees. The maximum temperature during the next 24 hours will hover around 17 to 18 degrees respectively. The morning will continue to have mist and shallow fog.
