North-South Koreas hold talks on Kaesong jt. industrial complex

Working-level officials from North and South Korea began talks on the operation of the Kaesong joint industrial complex. At the one-day talks at the North's border city of Kaesong, the South expected to bring up the subject of border restrictions that have slowed its transportation and communications in and out of the complex. <br/><br/>North Korea, meanwhile, is likely to bring up the issue of pay raises for North Korean employees, which the South has refused to accept.<br/><br/>The inter-Korean talks come amid heightened tensions after North Korea conducted live-fire artillery exercises in the area of the two Koreas' western sea border last week. At the joint industrial complex in Kaesong, some 110 South Korean firms operate with about 42,000 North Korean workers, producing mostly labor-intensive goods such as electronics, clothing and kitchenware.
