North India shivers under cold wave

Intense cold wave conditions prevail over northern parts of the country, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, following heavy snowfall in high altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

In the National Capital Delhi weather continued to remain foggy in the morning. The minimum temperature recorded below 5 degree celcius, three degree below normal, while the maximum on Friday settled at 21.7 degree celcius.

According to Met department, the city would have clear sky during the day. Met department has predicted thick mist and shallow fog on Sunday morning.

In Uttarakhand, dry cold wave conditions have affected normal life across the state. According to reports people are suffering from various diseases due to dry cold.

As per reports, a large number of people are suffering from various diseases due to dry cold which is prevailing in the state for the last fortnight. Frost at mid hills has affected the crops, whereas fog has been disrupting the road traffic and train services in the plane areas.

According to met department lowest minimum temperature of 2.6 degree Celsius was recorded at Mukteshwar last night in Kumaon division. While the night temperatures are dipping, sun shine during the day is providing relief to the residents of hill state. Director, Met department Anand Sharma predicts that prevailing weather conditions will continue in coming days.

In Himachal Pradesh, tourists and local people in large number are enjoying sessions of ice skating which began this week after the temperate dipped down near to the freezing point.

It's that time of the year again in Shimla when a red balloon is tethered to the roof of the British-era municipal corporation building. It signals the opening of Shimla's ice-skating rink, Over 200 skaters, mainly youngsters, enjoyed their run on skates at the rink today morning.

Shimla has India’s largest ice-skating rink as well as the only natural ice skating rink of the country. The Shimla ice skating rink is an outdoor rink being developed since 90 years after the British recognized the area’s potential and developed it as a skating rink in 1920.

The low temperatures and the thick blanket of forest help to ensure the skating rink remains shaded even when the sun is shining bright. “The skating club holds two sessions in a day -one in the morning and another in the evening.

The ice skating session in Shimla attracts a large number of tourist as well as experts in this sport. However normally the ice skating rink develops by the start of December and goes on till the end of February.

But this year high temperatures combined with cloudy skies, which act as a barrier in ice formation, led to delay in this development. Now once the skating is on large no of tourists as localites are coming to this place for ice skating.

Meanwhile, the entire Kashmir Valley is in the grip of a severe cold wave. The night temperature in Srinagar has dipped to minus four point three. A portion of world famous Dal Lake has frozen. AIR Srinagar correspondent reports that frozen taps and power cuts are adding to the winter woes of people as valley shivers.

This time cold wave in the Valley has intensified a head of Chilley Kalan the peak cold season of the winter months. With weather in world famous Dal Lake frozen and night temperature dipping to minus 4.3, people fear harsher days ahead. Most of the people stay in doors in the morning and Evening. Frequent power cuts and frozen tapes are adding to the winter woes of people in the Valley.

In Chandigarh, cold wave has started sweeping Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with minimum temperature remaining up to five degrees Celsius. Adampur near Jalandhar was the coldest with minimum temperature recorded at 0.7 degree Celsius followed by Ambala in Haryana having a minimum of 1.9 degree Celsius. Amritsar has recorded a minimum of 2.6 degree Celsius.
