North East region achieves huge success in field of raw silk

The North East region has achieved huge success in 2015-16 in the field of raw silk by producing nearly 5500 metric tonnes of eri, muga and mulberry. Taking part in AIR talk show silk scientists Somesh Paliwal and Soni Biyay Kumar said that, only Assam produced 142 metric tonnes of costly Muga in that period.Both of them said that the Centre and Assam government laid stress on quality Muga silk production. Laying out the steps, they said that Kamrup district administration is going to do a survey of cocoon farmers. Boko ,which is known for the quality Muga products will be branded to get international market as well as setting up of a cocoon bank at Boko. Also, Regional Muga Research Station is being developed as Muga Tourism destination by administration. Nearly 30 lakh cocoons have been produced at Boko last year.
