Nodal Empowered Group for news channels in final stage: I&B Min

The government on Tuesday said that it has almost finalised the Nodal Empowered Group which will act as the guiding centres for news channels during emergency situations like 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Replying to questions in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni said in Lok Sabha that though the government does not wish to censor or influence the media, the decision to set up such a group is on the request of News Broadcasters Association. She said that there was widespread anger over the way the Mumbai terror attack was telecast and its adverse impact. On the recurring violation of broadcast and telecast codes, Mrs. Soni said that her ministry has sent 30 notices to different channels violating the code during the last six months. She said that those found violating the programmes and advertisement codes are dealt under Cable regulatory act. However, she said that the government wants self regulation by the broadcast and other medias. On the issue of effective enforcement of the content code she said that government is in the process of holding consultations with all concerned stake holders to arrive at broad consensus on the recommendations of a committee. She said that government has asked all state governments for setting up monitoring committees for electronic media telecast contents at state and district level. She said that only six states has responded and 67 district committees has been set up.With regard to the cross holding by single media, Media house in print broadcast and television, the Minister said that government is looking into the guidelines on the issue. With regard to the 49 percent FDI proposed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI, she said that her ministry is sensitive and it would not want unchecked investment in this sector. <br/>
