No untoward incident after verdict on Ayodhya land dispute: Chidambaram

The Centre today said that the situation in the aftermath of the Allahabad High Court Judgment has been extremely peaceful and no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, the Home Minister Mr. P. Chidamabaram said, the government is pleased and satisfied at the response of the people to the judgement which in the Prime Minister's words has been respectful and dignified. He said, apart from 52 companies of central para military forces, and rapid action force personnel already deployed in Uttar Pradesh and forces in other states, a separate pool of paramilitary companies has been kept for any emergency. He said that the Indian Air Force is also on stand by to rush the para military or army personnel to troubled spots, if required. The Home Minister said that the Prime Minister has also pointed out that the correct conclusion of the judgment at this stage is that Status Quo will be maintained until the cases are taken up by the Supreme Court. He said that it is a fair assumption that appeals will be made to the Apex Court and it may pass some interim order. Replying to a number of questions, Mr. Chidamabaram said that the only role of the central government is to maintain the Status Quo at the site besides maintaining law and order and peace.
