Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has said the stability of the Government is not an issue after the pullout of the DMK from the UPA. Talking to the media outside parliament, he said the Government has a majority in parliament.

Mr. Chidamabaram said when a delegation of three union ministers met DMK chief M. Karunanidhi in Chennai yesterday, he wanted the Government to move amendments to the US resolution and also demanded that parliament adopt a resolution to condemn the human rights violations in Sri Lanka. Mr. Chidambaram said the Government received the final draft of the UNHCR resolution only late last night and it is considering whether amendments can be moved to strengthen that resolution. On the demand for a resolution in parliament, Mr. Chidambaram said all political parties will have to be consulted and the consultations have begun.

Mr. Chidambaram said the government has taken note of media reports quoting Mr. Karunanidhi as saying that his party will reconsider its decision to pull out of the UPA if a resolution on Sri Lanka is brought in parliament.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath told the Lok Sabha today that the government is ready for a discussion on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. He said the government is finalizing a date for the discussion and it will happen soon. Earlier, several members from Tamil Nadu raised the issue. Mr. Thambi Durai of the AIADMK asked the government what steps it has taken to strengthen the US-sponsored Resolution on Sri Lanka to be moved in UNHRC. Meanwhile, Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said the UPA government has lost the required numbers in the House due to the DMK's pullout. He said the government should clarify its stand. The Treasury Bench members strongly protested his remarks. As noisy scenes continued, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House till 2 PM. Earlier, the Lok Sabha witnessed an hour-long adjournment on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue. As soon as the House re-assembled at noon, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde introduced the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013, aimed at checking sexual harassment against women. The Minister withdrew the previous bill pending before the House.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM as DMK and AIADMK members rushed into the well raising slogans in favour of Sri Lankan Tamils. Earlier, it witnessed two adjournments on the same issue. As the uproar continued, Presiding Officer Renuka Choudhary adjourned the House till 2 PM.
The Rajya Sabha has since been adjourned till tomorrow.
