No threat of radioactivity: NPC

In Karnataka, amidst reports of leakage in Kaiga Nuclear Plant, the Nuclear Power Corporation said that there is no threat of radioactivity. In a press statement it said that on thorough survey of the plant, no indication of heavy water leakage from any of the reactors was found. However, it said that contamination of a water cooler could be the reason behind traces of radioactivity in the bioassay samples collected from some workers. Based on the analysis of these samples, a few personnel were advised for routine medical check up as per laid down procedures and they are attending to their normal duties. Our correspondent reports that the contaminated water cooler is isolated and the reasons behind its contamination are being investigated. The incident of contamination of a water cooler in the Kaiga power plant took place on November 25. It is learnt that water cooler was contaminated by Tritium, the radioactive isotope of hydrogen. The investigation has to reveal as to how the water cooler got contaminated by Tritium, an isotope used along with the Heavy water in the reactor. Meanwhile, the Atomic Energy Commission chief Anil Kakodkar said in Mumbai that people involved in leakage of radioactive substance in Kaiga nuclear plant will be punished under the Atomic Energy and other acts after investigation. He said ,the investigations are being carried out from two angles. First to ascertain as to who contaminated the water cooler with tritiated heavy water, and the second from radiation protection angle.
