Government has said that there will be no shortage of sugar in the 2016-17 season.<br/><br/>In a statement, the food ministry said that in the coming sugar season starting October, the total availability of sugar will be over 31 million tonnes against the annual demand of 26 million tonnes.<br/><br/>The Ministry said that the estimated production of sugar will be about 23 to 24 million tonnes in the current fiscal, the stock position at the close of the current sugar season will stand at 7 million tonnes which will be carried forward for the coming season adding up to 31 million tonnes against the domestic demand of about 26 million tonnes.<br/><br/>It further said that the government has taken necessary steps to maintain sufficient stocks in the country.<br/><br/>The government has imposed 20 per cent duty on export of sugar and has empowered state governments to impose stock holding limits on traders.
