No respite from cold wave in north India

Icy cold weather conditions intensified in Northern India with foggy weather slowing down the pace in several parts. In Jammu and Kashmir, Pahalgam recorded the season's coldest night in January in three years at minus 13.8 degrees Celsius.<br/> <br/>Leh in Ladakh region witnessed minus 16.8 degree and Kargil minus 15 degrees Celcius. The divisional administration has issued weather advisory particularly for avalanche prone areas asking the residents to remain vigilant. There is a forecast of isolated rain or snow for today. A senior official told AIR said that subject to fair weather and good road condition, the one way passenger traffic will be allowed to move from Jammu to Srinagar today. <br/> <br/>In Himachal Pradesh, in spite of a dry day, high altitude tribal areas reeled under arctic conditions with mercury staying between minus 16 and minus 23 degree. Keylong and Kalpa in tribal Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts recorded a low of minus 14.7 degree and minus 5.8 degree. Met office says forecast rains or snow at isolated places in mid and higher hills.<br/> <br/>In the plains of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana the wintry chill persisted. Fog has affected rail, road and air traffic in the region. Amritsar in Punjab and Karnal in Haryana were the coldest places in the region. Met office forecast similar conditions for the next two-three days.<br/> <br/>In the national capital icy winds swept across in the afternoon. Four trains were cancelled, 22 rescheduled and 30 delayed due to poor visibility though flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport continued uninterrupted. <br/> <br/>In Rajasthan also many cities registered minimum temperature between one and 8 degrees Celsius. Churu was the coldest place at 1.6 degrees Celsius.

No respite from cold wave in North India

There was no let up in the cold wave sweeping north India as Himachal Pradesh received fresh snowfall.

Vehicular traffic came to a halt following fresh snowfall in Shimla, Kinnaur, Chamba and some other areas yesterday.

Kufri, Narkanda, Sarahan, Khara-Patthar and Matiana received 100 to 150 cms of snow.

In Kashmir valley, restoration of power supply and resumption of one way traffic on Jammu-Srinagar national highway have brought some relief to the people. But, Met Department has ruled out any respite in cold wave sweeping the valley.

Delhiites had no respite from the chill with mercury

continuing its downward spiral. The maximum plunged three degrees below normal to settle at 17.6 degrees.

Punjab also reeled under piercing cold where holy city Amritsar shivered at a low of 0.4 degress Celsius.
