The government has said, there is no proposal to reintroduce National Judicial Appointments Commission at present. This was stated by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. In 2015, the Supreme Court struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act which sought to overturn the collegium system of appointing Supreme Court and High Court judges. Recently, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar questioned the verdict saying that there is no parallel to such a development in democratic history where a duly legitimized constitutional prescription has been judicially undone.
''
''On the number of pending collegium proposals with the Government, Union Law Minister said, as on 5th of this month, there is one proposal for the appointment of a Supreme Court Judge and eight proposals for appointment of High Courts Judges pending with Centre. Mr. Rijiju said, 146 proposals recommended by the High Court Collegiums are at various stages of processing with the Government and the Supreme Court Collegium. Replying to another question on creating an All India Judicial Service to make recruitment in the lower judiciary, the Minister informed that there is no such proposal of All India Judicial Service at this juncture in view of the divergence of opinion amongst the stakeholders.
